Not in Kansas Anymore
Well, here we are. It's 5 a.m. and we're both wide awake. I even took Tylenol PM, which usually overcomes any jet lag, but not tonight for some reason.
We've rented an apartment for the week that's near Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, and so on, which is handy. We didn't want to have to worry about finding a place to stay and dealing with all of our luggage (especially since we got in to Beijing around midnight), so even though the place isn't as nice as it seemed from the website, we're happy. It's clean, in a good location, and has wireless, so what more could you ask for?
On our first day in town, we went grocery shopping and got tons of groceries for $10. We ate lunch at the food court in the largest mall in Asia, the Oriental Plaza, and then did a walking tour of Wangfujing, a famous shopping street. We found a great English bookstore and got to see a part of town that we missed on our last trip.
To do this week: Find a more permanent living situation, visit the Lama Temple, see Mao's mausoleum, and try lots of great restaurants!
