Dong Dweji

One of things Jeju is known for is black pigs. The pigs are famous for their taste and infamous for the way they're raised--traditionally, the toilet for humans is over one corner of the lot, and the pigs get a lot of nutrition from, well, you can figure it out! Most people call them simply 'black pigs,' but they're also known as 'dong dweji'--poop pigs.

In spite of the pigs' creative but rather nasty diet, they're super delicious. We saw this pig during the day and then had samgapsal that night, and it was some of the best we've had here in Korea. One of our favorite samgapsal restaurants in Daejeon also has Jeju pork, though, so we could be biased. Actually, most people don't raise the pigs this way anymore (the picture is from a folk village, sort of like Living History Farms), so their tastiness probably has more to do with the breed than their diet.
