Biggest Birthday Party Ever
This Saturday we went to the 1-year birthday party of our manager's son. After living here for so long, you don't even notice all the things that once seemed so alien. But Saturday night I felt like I'd stepped right back into crazyland.
The first birthday is a really big deal here, and it's gotten even bigger in the last few years. The party was at a restaurant that had a bunch of party rooms specifically for first birthdays. There were huge posters of the baby and even a cardboard cutout of him that was super cute. And there was so much food!
The most bizarre part was the ceremony at the end where the baby chooses from a group of objects that symbolize his future. First he chose the golf ball (sports), but the parents had him try again and he chose the money (wealth), so they were happy. (At the other birthday party we've been to, the baby chose string, or long life, and they made him choose again until he picked the computer mouse.) The funniest, weirdest part was that the ceremony was hosted by a guy in a Batman suit and two girls in Sailor Moon-type costumes.
We knew it was going to be big, but this birthday party was bigger than a lot of Korean weddings! The sad thing about these parties is, the kids won't even remember it, and when they get older, they don't even get birthday parties half the time because they're too busy studying.
